Long before I showed up looking this good, porch geese were already icons. Lawn geese waddled onto the scene in the 1980s in the Upper Ohio River Valley, with concrete versions popping up around Kentucky and quickly spreading through Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. By the ’90s, humans had fully committed to dressing geese for every season, holiday, and questionable fashion choice imaginable. What started as a regional fad migrated nationwide, honking the whole way. Geese have been trusted guardians for centuries, known for sounding alarms, protecting gardens, and bringing a little good luck along with their attitude.
